Tarsier 48″x48″ Acrylic on Tile Board with Black Frame, May 2014.

Tarsiers are one of my favorite animals. They have been a species for over 45 million years and are found primarily in the Philippines. They are very small animals with extremely large eyes. They are nocturnal creatures which explain why there pupils are viewed as small when photographed in the daytime. Their size varies between 3-6 inches in height and weigh between 2-6 ounces. They are an extremely fascinating species. In fact, it is known that each eye weighs more than its own brain. I have always been mesmerized by these animals, which is why it came as no surprise to me when they became an inspiration for one of my pieces. I’ve always loved the fact that there eyes are enormous and their bodies are so minuscule. I absolutely had to express the size difference ratio in this piece, which is the main reason I decided to go with the bright, bold color of kiwi for the eyes. The tarsier is a fascinating animal that inspires feelings of awe, which I hope is the feeling others get when viewing this piece.
