Intellectual Ape 48″x48″ Acrylic on Tile Board, 2014.

“The Intellectual Ape” is a painting of an ape scratching its head. I love this piece because it only took about six hours and under twenty dollars’ worth of paint to complete. The idea for the ape came about after I applied the third color which was green. I noticed that there was a pondering ape looking right with two fingers scratching its head. I added black lines to emphasize its features and added some more detail. There is a reoccurring symbol in the top left corner which is a silhouette. People have noticed many things in this painting and not everyone sees the ape. There are multiple faces in the painting so I believe it may distract viewers from the overall image which in my opinion adds more to the story. The white background is an original primer that I apply to all the tile boards before painting them. The Intellectual Ape is considered abstract expressionism and has been featured on “Abstract and Interesting,” a webpage for artists.
